GHK-Cu: Copper Peptide for Skin, Anti-Aging & Systemic Repair – Port Charlotte Functional Medicine

GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine Copper Complex) is a naturally occurring copper tripeptide found in human plasma that declines with age. It regulates collagen and elastin production, activates antioxidant pathways, and supports tissue remodeling. It aims to improve skin elasticity, firmness, hair growth, wound healing, and reduce systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.

How GHK-Cu Works

GHK-Cu acts as a signaling molecule that “resets” gene expression toward a healthier, more youthful state. It stimulates fibroblast activity, promotes new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), balances matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) for proper extracellular matrix remodeling, and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines. These actions support both visible skin rejuvenation and broader regenerative effects.

Supporting Data from Peer-Reviewed Research

Multiple peer-reviewed reviews (2015–2025) document GHK-Cu’s ability to remodel the extracellular matrix and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in skin and tissue models. Key findings include:

  • A major 2018 review highlighted GHK-Cu’s capacity to tighten loose skin, improve elasticity and clarity, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, stimulate wound healing, and protect against UV damage.

  • Clinical studies (e.g., 12-week trials with 71 women and 67 women) using topical GHK-Cu creams showed increased skin density/thickness, reduced laxity, improved firmness, and visible reduction in photoaging signs.

  • Additional research demonstrates accelerated wound healing, reduced inflammation, and support for hair follicle health through collagen stimulation and anti-inflammatory pathways.

Note: While topical use has the strongest human clinical data, systemic (injectable) applications remain largely preclinical or anecdotal. Larger randomized controlled trials are ongoing.

FDA Status (as of May 2026)

GHK-Cu is NOT FDA-approved as a drug for any indication. Topical formulations are widely used as cosmetic ingredients. Injectable GHK-Cu was previously under Category 2 restrictions for compounding but was removed from that list in April 2026 and is under further PCAC review (targeted before February 2027).
